Food Scraps Recycling discontinues free compostable liners; here’s tips to keep your bin clean

East Hill Food Scraps Drop Spot, May 2023

Beginning on Nov. 1, 2023, the Food Scraps Recycling program will no longer provide free compostable liners. Food scrap recyclers can continue to use BPI-certified bin liners purchased through retailers, or choose to go liner-free.

For food scrap recyclers who prefer liner-free, the Department of Recycling and Materials Management (TCRMM) has compiled easy-to-implement suggestions for keeping bins clean and odor-free.

Here’s a few tips from our staff:

  • Line your food scraps bin with a paper towel or newspaper. Try a drop of dish soap on bottom before paper to make clean-up easier.
  • Store food scraps in freezer until Drop Spot day to help slow decomposition.
  • Drop off food scraps more frequently.
  • Rinse or wash bins every time your empty scraps.

TCRMM operates 18 Food Scraps Drop Spots throughout Tompkins County. For more about the program, including Drop Spot locations and hours, visit recycletompkins.org.
