FDN Adds Three Neighborhood Food Hubs

The following is a press release from Friendship Donations Network:

We’ve added 3 more Neighborhood Food Hub locations at the YMCA, Tompkins Community Action and EcoVillage. See the list below for details.

Don’t Let Your Veggies Grow Up to be Compost!

Have extra produce from your garden or CSA share? Donate it!

This summer gardeners and CSA members will have a convenient way to donate their extra vegetables, fruit and eggs by dropping them off at one of 10 convenient Neighborhood Food Hubs located throughout Tompkins County. New this season, several hubs will be “Give and Take” locations where people are encouraged to share their surplus and take what they can use.

Friendship Donations Network’s Neighborhood Food Hubs make donating garden produce easy. Simply drop off your extra vegetables, fruit or eggs at one of the Neighborhood Food Hubs, and they will be distributed to area food programs the next day. In the first five years of the program, local gardeners and CSA members donated more than 21,000 pounds of produce!

There is at least one active Neighborhood Food Hub on most days of the week from July 15 – October 15, with hubs located in Brooktondale, Groton, Ithaca, Newfield, and Trumansburg.  For a complete schedule and listing, visit https://friendshipdonations.org/hubs/. If you have questions or would like more information, please email hubs@friendshipdonations.org or call 607-216-9522.

About Friendship Donations Network:

Friendship Donations Network is a food rescue organization located in Ithaca, NY. Our mission is to rescue fresh, nutritious food that would otherwise be thrown away from stores and farms and redistribute it to neighbors in need throughout Tompkins County and beyond. We provide food donations to community programs, including meal programs, food pantries, low-income housing communities, and grassroots distribution. A full list of our program partners is on our website at friendshipdonations.org. Each week 2,000 people are served, and nearly 1,400 pounds of good food is diverted each day from the landfill.

A network of 200 volunteers and one part-time employee accomplish those goals with the food donations from local supermarkets, bakeries, dining halls, farmers and food processors. View our current list of food donors on our website.

Since its start in 1988, FDN has served a vital role in providing healthy food to needy households, while helping our community reduce the amount of useable food being thrown away.

Please let us know if you know of a community program that would like to help distribute food, or if you know of a local business that could be added to our list of food donors.
